GREGORY LEYH: How should consumers select a lawyer? First, services such as findlaw.com and superlawyers.com provide information about lawyers in relevant geographical areas and with various legal specialties. Use such a service to identify two to three law firms that fit your case. Visit those law firm websites and critically examine the content of the websites.
Second, don't rely simply on advertising. Advertising is typically very self-serving and doesn't completely describe a lawyer's ability or experience.
Third, meet the lawyer in person, preferably in that lawyer's office, where you can also meet relevant staff members who may be involved in handling your case.
Fourth, don't simply ask a lawyer to take your case. Ask what specific steps may be taken to best represent your interests.
Conceptualizing a lawsuit, even on a preliminary basis, and analyzing some of the tactical issues likely to arise will probably reveal something useful about that lawyer's analytical skills.
Finally, trust your instincts. If you're confident in your judgment about people, following these relatively simple steps should be helpful as you seek a lawyer. Good luck.
